Free Tax Filing Assistance

According to an article in the Dallas Morning News, The Internal Revenue Service’s Taxpayer Assistance Centers in Dallas and Farmers Branch will be available to help taxpayers prepare basic tax returns.

Taxpayers who qualify for the earned income tax credit or earned less than $42,000 during 2008 are eligible to receive the free tax preparation assistance. Taxpayers should bring information for all family members including:

  • social security numbers
  • banking information
  • W-2, 1099 forms
  • daycare information
  • If couples are filing a joint tax return, both must be present to sign the form. If you’re having trouble filling out your 2008 tax forms this can be a great opportunity to get some assistance. If you owe money on this year’s return please do not allow that to stop you from taking advantage of this service. The taxpayer assistance centers are there to assistance you navigate the tax process not act as bill collectors. If you owe several years of back taxes and are overwhelmed by other debts, and/or facing foreclosure you may want to consider bankruptcy. Taxes are a priority debt but can be discharged in bankruptcy under certain circumstances.
