Sources to Help You Find the Right Bankruptcy Attorney

Many debtors who seek bankruptcy protection often don’t know where to start when it comes to hiring a bankruptcy attorney.  While it is important to know what to look for when hiring legal representation, some people may feel they have limited sources to choose from.  Most don’t realize there are a variety of sources available that can help you find the right lawyer.

  • Obtain recommendations from people you trust such as family, friends and co-workers.
  • If you used legal representation in the past, seek a referral from another attorney.
  • Does your job offer group legal plans? These plans can also be a good source for legal advice that may lead to a prospective lawyer.
  • Check local and state bar associations and referral panels.  This is most likely the best place to review a listing of attorneys in your area.
  • Online directories.  There are several websites that offer legal directories such as the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, that also provide background details including experience and other areas of practice.
  • Nonprofit organizations that offer legal services.  There are legal aid organizations that offer assistance for those with low-income.  Some may not offer legal representation but they offer guidance for various situations.
  • Information and services offered at law schools.  There are law schools that offer legal advice for free through legal clinics. There could be income requirements to meet in order to qualify.

While it’s helpful to obtain a referral it’s up to you to check credentials and experience.
